Interview

TYIN tegnestue Architects è uno studio nato nel 2008 ed è diretto da Andreas G Gjertsen e Yashar Hanstad. Risponde: Yashar Hanstad

When did you realize you wanted to become an architect?
Becoming an architect is a very gradual process, and I guess we still consider ourselves to be students of architecture. The feeling of building your first building is a very powerful sensation… suddenly we have become architects.

Who was your "maestro"?
We have several teachers and mentors that have been crucial in the development of TYINs works. The most prominent names would be our prof. Hans Skotte at NTNU and architect Sami Rintala.

As you design, what is the first thing you do?
The most important things we do when beginning a new project is to visit the site, build a good team and get a feel of what materials and resources are available in the specific situation.

Your house is on fire, what book, what movie and what works do you save?
I think the value in our work lies in our accumulated experience and no book, movie or work would be invaluable...

What is your favorite building material?
The available one. And materials that we understand and can mould with simple means. There's is nothing wrong with wood, stone and glass. Why change a winning recipe?

Beatles or Rolling Stones?
Deftones

Mac or PC?
Mac

Le Corbusier or Mies?
Louis Kahn

Mouse or pencil?
We actually use whiteboards and markers a lot. It's a great design tool to bring on site and it has a kind of instantaneous quality. What you remember and understand comes out.

Is there architecture without buildings?
Buildings are architecture, but architecture can be more than buildings.

The house you would like to live in?
Home. As a homeless professor once said, standing surrounded by his books: "My house is torn down, and I have no place to put my home."

What is your motto?
As Nabil Hamdi once write: Don´t think too much before you start working, and don´t work to much before you start thinking.
