This house in Matanzas is situated at the top of a cliff, 65mts. approximately above sea level.

A two storey house, for a couple and their son, is structured within a square volume of 9 by 9mts. Inside intersects another volume at a higher level, which is rotated 45 degrees in relation to the floor plan, allowing double heights and the arrangement of spaces in the first floor.

The program is ordered in a simple way, at the first floor a single space for the living room, dining room and kitchen and on the back a sleeping area and the stairs to the second floor.

Then, to the side and facing north, the terrace partly enclosed, allowing the users to go outside during days of extreme wind.
Finally, in the diagonal volume or second floor, the room and the bathroom.

Three defined sectors as the result of the orientation to the panoramic views of the landscape: the isle, the beach and the forest in front of the ocean.

Double house - Langarita-Navarro Arquitectos

Moving their home to the outer limits of a small town in the province of Zaragoza is the wish of a newly married couple about to retire. Embodied in their decision lies the conviction that it is possible to both undergo a radical change and still enjoy the comforts of their previous life. To explore this dual situation a project has been designed which attempts to evade its usual position as a solution at the end of a process and to take positions as starting point or state previous to the development.

It is generally accepted that the difference between the rural and the urban worlds has to do with the proximity to certain centres and to the specific ways of life derived from them. Descriptions linked to constructions (in their broadest sense) which display spaces, rhythms and rituals between people and their surroundings. With this project, our aim was to evaluate, starting with the home, which housing conditions and expectations of life could mobilise each of these forms by contrasting them with the experiences and wishes of the clients. The conversations led to a duality of interests: on the one hand those regarding manageability, ways of use, organisation and representation associated to those of a conventional urban flat; and on the other hand, the search for an uninhibited, light-hearted and active life, linked to the outdoors and a move to a softened “wild life”.

The plot, with a gentle, northward slope overlooking a wide, cultivated valley, is within the boundaries of the mountain town of Algairén, devoted mainly to the production of wine and oil. The land is part of an olive grove, annexed to the perimeter of the village. The house is positioned on the north side along the length of the developable limit in order to gain a small garden and a vegetable patch to the south and have privacy from the street. The project has been developed using two parallel houses, elevated a storey above ground level to enjoy views of the valley and the olive trees.

The first is a rectangular structure, conventional in construction with a narrow section, inheritor of the ideas of the modern movement where the nuclei of kitchen and bathroom areas separated the various living spaces thus always ensuring independence, dual orientation and cross ventilation. Leaving the windows behind on the southern façade (as would an adolescent Gerald Durrel in search of adventure), the second home can be reached: an irregular geometric platform covered by a structural wooden shutter which folds to create different, unplanned areas connected directly to the bathrooms and kitchen self-contained functionality.

The two structures achieve specific characteristics and are geared to use and optimise the house’s resources. The inside of the house is extended on the ground floor to resolve the programme’s requirements. The central nucleus which gives access to the upper floors separates two areas, of non-referential character, serves as a garage and party area. The exterior of the house is covered by a wooden frame with deciduous climbing plants that ensure intimacy from the street while at the same time stopping the house getting hot in the summer and guarantees, along with the planted roof, one of the foundations of the project: the avoidance of mechanical HVAC systems and savings in energy resources.

The double house avoids blurring the limits between both desired ways of life or finding a single equal space. On the contrary, the project, with its duality, offers a coexistence of two differentiated house designs encouraging a state of permanent transition.

TEACHING BRIDGE AT THE ECOLE POLYTECHNIQUE FÉDÉRALE DE LAUSANNE REHABILITATION / EXTENSION OF THE MECHANICS HALL AND LIBRARY
The transformation of the old mechanics hall and the central library of EPFL was awarded to Karl Steiner company for the project of Dominique Perrault, author – among others – of the French National Library. The buildings will house the Neuroprothetic Centre, as well as administrative offices. The Neuroprothetic Centre was launched end 2008 and is cofinanced by the foundations Bertarelli and Defitec(Borel family). The new «heart» of the Ecole polytechnique federale de Lausanne will show new adornments. Located just above the Rolex Learning Center, the mechanics hall and the old central library will be completely transformed and extended. Following an invitation launched to several general construction companies, which called on famous architectes, the Swiss group Karl Steiner was selected thanks to a project signed by the French Dominique Perrault.

Among Perrault’s works are the French National Library François Mitterand in 1995, the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, EWHA University in Seoul, the Olympic tennis centre in Madrid, as well as the Fukoku Tower in Osaka. In Switzerland Dominique Perrault currently realizes the urban planning of the new station district FFS in Locarno. Construction started in summer 2011, and is financed by a budget of 60 M CHF, granted by the federal parliament end 2009. The project follows to a certain extent the construction of the Rolex Learning Center, since the contents of the central library was transferred to this new flagship building of the school, thus liberating important volumes. This will allow to regroup a part of the school’s central services and create several new laboratories for students of the Engineering and Science Faculties.

The Neuroprothetic Centre will thus have dedicated space and be perfectly equipped. « The selected project seduced us because it establishes a strong link between the old buildings of the campus and the new constructions in the South», explains Francis-Luc Perret, EPFL vice-president, in charge of real estate and president of the jury. «The architect created a new lively space, located between the Rolex Learning Center and the congress centre, currently under construction in the North. » In a second phase, an ambitious construction, the highest of the campus, could be built above Avenue Picard, which is crossing the site from south to north. Called « Teaching Bridge » by the architect, the structure will show several levels dedicated to teaching purposes. « In addition to giving life and consistency to a heterogeneous place, the new training space, puts forward modern pedagogical forms which our school wants to promote», concludes Francis-Luc Perret, who is happy to state that the architect has integrated into his reflexion a true urban planning approach «thus creating a new dynamic in the heart of the campus ».

San Quirino - Elasticospa+3

Il Piano di Recupero riguarda un’area nel centro del comune di San Quirino, attualmente occupata da alcuni edifici abbandonati in avanzato stato di degrado edilizio e urbanistico. In funzione delle tipologie e dello stato di conservazione si prevedono diversi tipi di intervento:demolizione dei volumi accessori, nuova costruzione, ristrutturazione delle costruzioni aventi caratteristiche architettoniche rilevanti e, per gli edifici più significativi, è previsto anche il recupero delle pareti in sasso. A quest’ultima categoria di intervento appartiene il primo progetto realizzato che consiste nella ristrutturazione dell’edificio principale del complesso, da adibire a residenza unifamiliare.

L’idea progettuale è scaturita dalla necessità di conciliare le funzioni abitative e le attuali esigenze di comfort con una struttura in avanzato stato di degrado. La casa mantiene, inoltre, alcuni elementi di pregio: le pareti in sassi, il porticato ad archi, il prospetto principale ad est caratterizzato dalla forte matericità e dalla armonia dei rapporti tra le aperture. La struttura originaria è dunque stata considerata come un involucro al cui interno nasce un nuovo organismo, caratterizzato da un’aggregazione di volumi scatolari (tanto per provare anche noi a fare delle scatole, che piacciono sempre) che slittando tra loro a diversi livelli creano spazi complessi.

Le scatole in cemento armato a vista si manifestano in modi diversi all’esterno: rompendo in alcuni punti l’involucro edilizio originario e aggettando oppure fermandosi a filo della parete in sassi, occupando parte del portico. Il prospetto frontale rimane inalterato, gli archi vengono mantenuti nelle dimensioni originarie così come le finestre del primo piano, che vengono riutilizzate.

La coesistenza di linguaggi architettonici così distanti dà grande risalto alle preesistenze, evitando in modo categorico imitazioni e mimetismi. Gli interventi di recupero preciso e filologico delle vecchie strutture sono accostati a interventi che dichiarano crudamente la loro contemporaneità. Ad esempio il fogolar, elemento tipico della tradizione, viene recuperato e riproposto senza indulgere a sentimentalismi formali: l’antica struttura ormai fatiscente è stata sostituita con un blocco aggettante, il cui piano di copertura serve da terrazza e apre la tipologia edilizia originaria ad un rapporto più diretto tra interno e paesaggio.

All’interno, la freddezza del cemento a vista delle scatole si alterna a pareti rivestite in legno e, dove possibile, alla muratura in sassi recuperata. Alla luce che entra dalle ridotte finestre originarie, si affianca quella che attraversa le ampie aperture ricavate nei muri nuovi, mentre un lucernario illumina il vuoto a tutta altezza sopra l’ingresso. L’equilibrio tra questi elementi caratterizza ed arricchisce l’esperienza dello spazio.

Golf House - Elasticospa+3

La casa è inserita all’interno di un golf club sulle colline a ridosso dell’appennino ligure-piemontese: fa parte di una lottizzazione caratterizzata da villette vernacolari poco precise, vestite di un lusso ordinario. Utilizzando gli stessi materiali, senza uscire dalle prescrizioni del piano attuativo, il progetto si impone sull’intorno come soggetto alieno a quelle logiche insediative che, indifferenti agli stimoli di un contesto eccezionale, impongono visioni omologate dell’abitare contemporaneo. L’intera composizione è dettata dalle due ali dell’edificio che si divaricano formando una v, un segno forte e preciso, accentuato dall’andamento delle falde del tetto, che sale progressivamente da sud a nord e viceversa, attorno al fulcro determinato dal camino. Il culmine è un volume a sbalzo che ospita la camera padronale affacciata con una loggia verso le colline.

Tale movimento determina anche il disegno dei prospetti, caratterizzati da un muro intonacato che all’estremità dell’ala est, in corrispondenza dell’autorimessa, è ancorato al suolo, ed in seguito si eleva svelando ampie vetrate sulla zona giorno. L’apertura delle due ali accoglie al piano terra l’ingresso principale, coperto da un terrazzo accessibile dalle camere al piano primo.

Per un edificio immerso nel verde, la fruizione degli spazi esterni svolge un ruolo fondamentale, per questo motivo è stata posta particolare cura nel rapporto interno-esterno: i setti portanti, che fuoriescono dal perimetro del volume chiuso, così come le diverse pavimentazioni che continuano all’esterno, delimitano spazi più circoscritti e riservati.

Country House - Elasticospa+3

Il progetto è intervenuto su un complesso di case rurali in linea, disomogeneo e caratterizzato da superfetazioni ed uno skyline frammentato, proponendo in primo luogo una riequilibratura tipologica della struttura insediativa che desse maggiore omogeneità all’intero complesso, nel rispetto della tipologia costruttiva. Attraverso interventi di demolizione, ricostruzione in sagoma e sopraelevazione si è ottenuto un volume unico, un lungo parallelepipedo con copertura a due falde, che tuttavia conserva memoria della struttura preesistente.

Ciò è evidente in particolare nel prospetto sud, caratterizzato da un lato dalla riproposizione tipologica della forometria esistente, nel pieno rispetto della serialità e dei rapporti dimensionali tra larghezza-altezza, dall’altro dalla reinterpretazione delle grandi aperture di porticati e fienili presenti nelle abitazioni rurali in funzione del nuovo uso residenziale. Queste due differenti logiche compositive caratterizzano tuttavia solo la pelle più esterna dell’edificio, realizzata in mattoni facciavista secondo la tecnica costruttiva del “triage” -tipica delle abitazioni agricole friulane: dietro questo rivestimento si mantiene così la libertà di aprire ampie vetrate che inondano di luce i locali interni ma sono schermate dal grigliato in mattoni, creando effetti scenografici sia all’interno nelle ore diurne sia verso l’esterno con l’illuminazione artificiale durante le ore di buio. Nelle porzioni di muratura piena si propone una tessitura con alcuni mattoni posati di testa che sporgono dal filo della facciata, un positivo che si lega al negativo delle porzioni realizzate in triage.

All’estrema semplicità compositiva del volume esterno si contrappone un’articolazione interna molto complessa generata dall’intersezione di cilindri di differenti diametri che definiscono gli spazi e sono percepibili a differenti livelli, dal volume della scala all’ampio vuoto a tutta altezza su cui si affaccia il volume chiuso della cabina armadio. Qui prevale la presenza del cemento a vista accentuando il divario tra interno ed esterno che può essere percepito dalle grandi aperture del terrazzo e del piano terra.

4 Porches and 4 Skylights House - Ferran Vizoso, Jesús Cardona

The clients asked for a house that had to be close from the outside but open from the inside. Had to have introverted facades, to maintain the privacy of their adjacent plot, but at the same time generous views towards all its carefully landscaped perimeter.

Four triangular porches solved the paradoxical demand due to the “inverted funnel effect” of their walls, a shape able to simultaneously offer wide views from the inside and massive facades from the outside. The solution “dislocated” the geometry of the whole plan and generated very rich visual relations in between the house and the garden.

When the big sliding doors are open, hided into the walls, the four triangular outdoor areas connect each other and the interior becomes one only great porch, a big shadow in between four intimate “pavilions” (the three bedrooms and the sitting room) with the constant presence of the changing daylight and the garden views.

In the bathrooms, through triangular skylights with mirrors on two of their three sides, the sun light descends causing surprising kaleidoscopic reflections. With all this, the residence becomes a comfortable and protected “interior” not being “in front of” or “by the” nature, but absolutely surrounded by it.

Frederiksberg Courthouse - 3XN

In accordance with the Danish design tradition, Frederiksberg Courthouse is the result of a rigorous and pragmatic process, where the challenges of the programme and the site were the creative point of departure. The successful result is an elegantly curved building, classical yet modern.

The design strategy takes its signal from the neighboring neo-classical courthouse designed by Hack Kampmann. To ensure a respectful dialogue with Kampmann’s building only parts of the building plot of the 5,000 m2 site was exploited and the new courthouse is kept lower against Kampmann’s building towards east while rising against the taller buildings towards south.

This resulted in a compact structure of 5,500 m2 designed at a respectful angle of 45 degrees to the listed courthouse and with an open corridor between the buildings, which are connected by a glass footbridge. A row of old trees was preserved by letting the western facade curve elegantly.

The brick and tile facade express solidity and creates a relationship with the existing cityscape. The elevation of the facade by the main entrance combined with the light tones of the facade adds lightness and gives the courthouse identity. The interior is designed in coherence with the values of a modern democracy. It is a key parameter that all user groups, from staff to defendants, experience a logic and friendly environment with optimally separated flows.

All rooms are designed to lighten the mood, bringing in daylight from both sides. The design also takes into account the requirements for discretion and limited visibility from the windows which are placed above eye-level.

An atrium with skylight cuts through the middle of the building; drawing daylight deep into the interior and creating visual connections between decks. Shifting light art promotes a play of light and a pleasant atmosphere. In total the building contains eight courtrooms, offices and ancillary rooms in the form of library, meeting and waiting areas, staff canteen, detention facilities and parking. Moreover the programme includes the surrounding garden.

The Construction
Frederiksberg courthouse is a concrete and steel construction. The building has a golden brick and tile façade with steel louvers, which express solidity and creates a relationship with the existing cityscape. Inside flooring is primarily terrazzo and lino. The building rests on a concrete foundation, anchored with ground anchors. The supporting structure is of concrete elements. The building’s facade is completed with bearing concrete inner walls. The eastern façade is a truss design. The roof structure is steel trapez roof on steel beams.

Sustainability
The sustainability strategy of Frederiksberg Courthouse is ambitious. The building is categorized as a low energy building in the Danish building code. The building’s compact form, the immense use of daylight together with natural ventilation and the thermo active surfaces with night cooling result in significant energy savings.

The building has a green roof, which both delays rain water in coming into the sewers and has an insulating effect. Thus the green roof cools the building on very hot days and preserves the heat during the rather cold Danish winters. Since this type of roof does not accumulate heat the same way as traditional roof materials, it has a positive effect on the climate in the immediate surroundings. The outer coating of the building allows rainwater to seep through to the underground. The light installation by Steven Scott in the foyer area is self-sufficient by solar cells placed on the roof top.

In the choice of materials there has been a very high focus on assuring a good working environment for the construction staff, who were working on the building site, as well as for the people who were to work in and use the building after completion. All materials are chosen by their long lifespan, their robustness and the possibility to withstand heavy wear or vandalism.

“The considerable bulk of the building is mitigated by a generously proportioned sloping roof which runs down to the lesser form of the neighbouring 1921 classical Court House, to which it is linked by a high-level glazed bridge. Its relevance and sensitivity to context is celebrated through the use of beautifully crafted in-situ and pre-fabricated panels of brickwork, and its fenestration enlivened by the use of external, folding, perforated aluminium shutters.

Internally, the plan, cross-section and circulation are resolved with supreme clarity and simplicity, with a full-height, generously day-lit (and sun-lit) space extending through the length of the building providing an attractive feature for all users, while affording the necessary separation for security and the needs of the Courts service. The court-rooms are models of simplicity and reticence.”

Jean Moulin School - Prinvault Architectes

The Jean Moulin School, built in Bernay (Normandy) in 2012 by Prinvault Architectes (Paris) replaces a school destroyed in an arson attack in 2009. The project satisfies three requests of the municipality: to adjust the size of the school to the current local schooling needs, to redefine the nature of the relation to the existing family center and to rejuvenate the area with a contemporary building. Built on a single level, the building is organized around a central corridor with niches recessed to accommodate benches and create various informal spaces for children. Different sized windows frame multiple views of the court, the sky or the treetops. The building skeleton is a timber frame structure, its roof is green and the heating burns wood. The new building has hence overcome the traumatic loss with its range of 1000 colorful cladding strips that match the colors fire: a digitized photo revealed a spectrum of 2.5% black, 2.5% zinc yellow, 2.5% yellow gold, 2.5% red-brown, 25% orange-red, burgundy 25%, and 40% carmine red… A random formula Excel is then used to generate the distribution of the 1000 strips the facade cladding component.

1 Huge Skylight Church - Ferran Vizoso, Núria Bordas

The main purpose of the work was to restore the public use of the old temple, transforming it in a new and secure multifunctional public room. But the challenge was to do it without changing its appearance, a great symbol and expression of the Spanish Civil War.

In the third phase of the works the structural consolidation was completed and a new transparent EFTE plastic roof was done. This new cover stops the deterioration of the construction, due to rain and wind, and greatly improves its habitability conditions. Then the people of Corbera will be able to use the space without worrying about the weather.

Since the beginning of the works one thing was clear, the restoration had to preserve the subtle balance in between nature and construction (exterior and interior) that all runes have. The perception of still being outside when “entering” in the old church had to be kept. The sun’s rays passing through the light weighted transparent cover, the air breezes and bird sounds crossing the high naves from all over and the sandy pavement made it possible. The result is a very original romantic scenario halfway in between in and out.

Chungha Building - MVRDV

Just before a Korean pop-song became a global success on YouTube for the first time in history, and Gangnam became world famous as the nouveau riche hangout of the South-Korean capital Seoul, MVRDV was commissioned by Woon Nam Management Ltd. to redefine a building on Gangnams chic Apgujung Road. Even though the Chungha building was completed in the 1980’s it was already outdated in a street dominated by flagship stores. The transformation, which added an extra level, was completed in just 9 months.
