Yorkshire Pavilion

concept:

Image-02_large

the concept for the ‘mollusc’ pavilion presented here was based not only on providing a space for people to gather, use and celebrate but to provide a pavilion which through its appearance and use could become an icon for yorkshire and would have a lasting effect on the people and places it visited. envisaged more as a fictitious traveler roaming the region, the proposal would endeavor to provide an exciting venue for the places it rests and through its arrival and erection would offer an opportunity to witness a public event which would be open to all. alongside this it was pictured that the pavilion, much like the art and architecture within the region, would become a piece of sculpture in itself, made from solid materials and emitting a sense of place, belonging and solidarity, it would sit and rest as if it had been weathering under the yorkshire skies for decades with a small glimmer of light shining from inside emitting a feeling of anticipation to the visitor.

uses:

the ‘mollusc’ has been designed to form both a single and multiple arrangement. it can be demounted into a group of parts which can be fitted within a container and which can be erected to form one or several shell envelopes. through these different envelopes it is possible to achieve various different configurations and uses without loosing the sculptural and solid aesthetic and feel which the pavilion emits. depending on the arrangement, the ‘moullisc’ shells can be used for music, theatre, art, cinema, exposition, festival and shelter. the arrangements can be achieved by rolling the individual shell envelopes into different positions which is assisted by wheels which are connected to the the three bottom corners of each unit. these units can then be connected by large scale palatable fabrics, or placed directly up against one another.

technology:

in order to provide a solid, long-lasting envelope, the ‘mollusc’ pavilion employs laminated plywood segments which are strengthened and stiffened with plywood beams and flanges forming the shell like appearance of the pavilion. this shell is supported by a steel base frame and steel spine which when fixed together form a highly stable and rigid envelope. the base frame contains ballast tanks which can be filled with any element which the site has to offer making the pavilions foundations portable, unobtrusive and non-impacting on their surroundings. the steel spine will enable the ‘event’ process of erection and unfolding of the pavilion and will also contain all the service runs and rigs in order to use the space for a number of different events!
