The project predicts the recuperation of the “Sebastião Corte Real” house, inserted in the historical area of the town, stretching out for two pieces separated by a small street and partially occupied by some ruined constructions.

The main entry is done through the recovered patio in the South of the house, to where the reception, the shop and the cafeteria are opened, autonomous to the museum spaces and to remainder functions of the Centre – archive, educative services, centre of documentation and administration.

The exhibitions, reserves and workshop occupy in an extensive form the South piece, raising a functionally optimized area; the access to these spaces is done passing under the existent street and rising through the ramp or staircase which mark the distribution space of the new construction, in which the expositive areas are illuminated from the patio that mediates the relation of the building with the exterior.

In terms of materials, the project includes two basic options: the recuperation of the existent constructive elements, at the house to restore, and the creation of new structures, with contemporary expression that retakes present aspects in the constructions that are substituted – like the exterior finishes of walls and pavements, which will be done from the material that constitutes the ancient mixed walls of schist and granite, recycling the demolished elements.
