A new School and day-care center in Mårtensbro, Espoo, west of Helsinki, proposal in an invited competition.

The starting point of the design has been the large scale landscape and scenery. The building pays regard to the points of compass (opening to the south) and especially the difficult approach routes of the students and small children.

The task was very complicated with user groups ranging from small children to teenagers. Special care has been taken to the learning environment design: colours, shadows, light conditions and the technical features of the building, which are as well a part of the educational program of the school.

The interesting characteristics of the site (open rock formations) have been used as a part of the interiors. The pseudonym “moder jord” = “mother earth” emphasizes the interior ideas.

The building has two sides: the “back” towards the North, the ”belly” towards the South. On the northern side the building material is burnt brick in different shades. The southern side has been clad with wood. The fifth façade (roof) is made of zinc.

The Mårtensbro school creates a rich, easily oriented and secure learning centre for its different using groups. Its architecture is a natural part of the existing urban structure.
