Dublin’s Parlour

The initial concept for the design of this important urban square emerged from a consideration of the potential inherent in the site context and the almost provisional nature of the brief. The square is contained to the north and south by existing buildings both of which function as spaces of reception, performance and entertainment. The idea was to draw this space of performance out into the square by creating a new, immersive environment which would lend a unique character to this pivotal urban room and draw the two spaces of performance together. By introducing a web of low-tension cables that span the distance between the two buildings, a new sky is created within the space of the square. The cables are similar to those employed for the Luas which allows for simple connections to existing buildings. These cables provide support not only for visual breaks and windbreaks but also create an infrastructure for hanging lights, decorations, canopies and backdrops for any event that the square hosts.
