The LSE anticipates growing by an additional 1,500 full-time equivalent students over the next 5 years. The school commissioned KPF to prepare a masterplan to guide its growth over this period.

A masterplan for Old Building, the heart of the LSE campus, creates an atrium and an associated Student Services Centre.

The masterplan started with a detailed research projects, undertaken with DEGW, to audit the existing building stock and assess individual departments’ future growth plans. This work identified that much of the estate had serious shortcomings and appropriate strategies of renovation and disposal were accordingly developed. A proportion of new building replaced the worst of the existing accommodation. The character of this space was developed to offer flexibility to house either workspace, teaching or ancillary accommodation to respond to the needs of the school into the future.

The dense character of the existing estate, which had grown through ad-hoc acquisition, lacks a sense of social focus. Formerly a major London open market – Clare Market – it had existed in the 10th century in a position at the heart of the present campus. The masterplan re-established this space to provide a gathering space for the members of the school community.
