Our starting point for the Bishop Edward King Chapel was to look at the typography of church buildings through the centuries. Our design is informed by the traditional organization of the cloister, side chapels, presbytery and the nave.

Our scheme positions the Chapel as the central welcoming focus of the campus. The curved walls of the Chapel draw together the surrounding college buildings and symbolise the opening arms of a place of worship.

A series of small spaces off of the main tall central chapel define the perimeter of the building. The size and positioning of these spaces is determined by surrounding mature trees. A small prayer room looks out onto a sheltered garden, providing an intimate space for introspective and personal worship and prayer. Next to the sacristy there is a smaller separate prayer space that can be used by the priest or by a sole visitor to the chapel.

Proposed materials include Oxfordshire stone at lower level to visually connect the church to other college buildings and a white render above the entrance canopy and throughout the main chapel to enhance the building’s sculptural form and maximize daylight in to the building. Sedum roofs are proposed for the lower level roofs that are overlooked by neighbouring buildings.
