Like an artifact, an antique vase rebuild from its pieces, the building connects the institutions. Each part has its own individuality, its own history, but only together they are complete. Like this the building for the institutions of the „Römisch-Germanischen Zentralmuseum“, the „Landesmuseum“ and the „ Landesarchäologie“ together with the already existing „ Museum für Antike Schifffahrt“ and the antique roman theatre create a centre of culture. The two parts of the building embrace a forum, a space that is the final point of the connection between historical city and archaeological centre. Here – where once stood the historical city gate – we create a new „gate“ between the two parts of the building that leads people to the forum and the museums. The forum is the first exibition space. Rounded by steps/ranks like an amphitheatre it can already be used for presentation of exponates – or if in the process of construction work archaeological monuments beneath will be found it will be part of the exhibition. The levels of the building refer to the levels of excavations. The inner side of the building is formed in terracing and gradings. Insights through the „gates“ and parts of the facade produce curiosity and make the exihibitions part of the public space. The front of the building represents in its material – stone, bronze, iron – the historical eras of mankind.
