The design of the market place in Mönchengladbach Rheydt explores the tension between past and presence with structural means and the use of different materials. It is aimed for a harmonic contemporary interpretation of the space. A new structure of differentiated parts, each of them characterized by an outstanding quality, integrates the surrounding buildings. New open spaces for gastronomic devices and concise green structures are supporting the positive atmosphere and give a new centre to the quarter.

The main structure consists of three different parts that give place to the functionalities and needs of neighbours and visitors. Framing the actual place, the market terraces and the church plateau have been lifted up three steps and establish a green marge. Thus the view concentrates on the central historic town hall. The terraces and the church plateau are sharpened by a concrete bench integrating the staircases of the car park in the basement.

Central part of the market place is the big cobble stone carpet. The image of a torn out carpet, showing the traces of its use over the years, gave reason to the conceptual idea of an abstract structure. With a differentiated choice of bright and dark cobble stones the natural signs of wear and tear become an essential part of the place design.
