The new German Law School – a collaborative project of the European Business School and the state of Hessen – is situated within the inner city context of Wiesbaden, Germany. The building mirrors the three-wing layout of the free-standing monument of a former county court. In closing the city block, an inner courtyard is created which forms a secluded campus for recreation, yet visibly connected to the adjacent streets through the main glass foyer and other openings.

The side wings continue the width of the court building, fitting a typical office layout, whereas the deeper building volume on the southern site line gives room to all special areas such as lecture halls, a library, work stations etc. In adopting the levels of the old building, the symmetrical extension allows easily accessible passageways and, with circular connection, easy orientation within the complex. All floors are connected through a series of open stairs, where wide open areas are attached, with look-outs to the urban context, to internal functions or the courtyard.

From the main street, the wide foyer not only draws visitors into the courtyard but also offers views deep into the new building and the so called ‘marketplace’, a central gathering space with meeting and exhibition areas for external partners, students and visitors, reflecting the close network to markets and business partners the university maintains. On Ground level, restaurant and foyer open up to the courtyard and to several event spaces, whereas the main lecture halls, auditorium and seminar rooms are located on the floor above. The library and working stations are grouped on the third floor and the top floor is reserved for executive areas, with terraces and balconies directed to the surroundings.

The façade is divided in fully glazed areas, with closed panels added wherever the use is requiring it. A large fin structure of stone or concrete is placed in front, with external sun shading elements running in between wherever needed. Fully glazed special areas as the foyer or the library are done with three-layered glass, fulfilling or even exceeding the strict German energy saving code.
