Fresh! New illuminates Old
The Science District design develops from robust and interpretable rules of adjacent local structures. A resulting system of public spaces and local networks fix the new quarter in the existing urban fabric while establishing new relations between the city centre and river compound.

The existing fabric of heterogenous structures act as a starting point to organize dispersed city fragments: Old Town, University Campus, Science Port, and the existing port which is to be developed as a new scientific area west of the warehouses. Utilizing the intrinsic logic of each, the four fragments are extended and correspondingly brought closer together, ultimately resulting in a system of interacting structures. Appropriate citywide importance is given to the science port through the placement of three key buildings which as visual high points mark within the cityscape the regained city quarter. The different grains of new structure are brought together through spatial modularity and subtle transitions in materiality. The landscape develops in a similar manner as typical river vegetation and seepage surfaces are pulled into the urban realm, providing the city with environmental atmosphere. Framed and permeated by new lightweight structures, the original industrial halls and warehouses are given new life, their presence and history contributing to the unique identity of the emerging science quarter.
