White House Redux

Planimetria0_large

Plan of Washington D.C.

The election of the 44th President of the United States was expected from everyone as an important change in the world, after have seen the USA government taking such decisions about new wars. To design the President’s residence who rapresents the USA entity in the world was a challenge to face in a radical way in terms of architecture but at the same time to take easy thinking to its importance. If this place will house this ‘apparently’ very important power it was clear that a symbolic attribute could be used and helpful to express this greatness. It was choosen to give this role to an idea of nature. The house looks like a hill, and, surrounded by water, the room is partly hypogean. Wide glazed areas in the slopes (the roof) that can be opened, assure natural lighting and ventilation for the underlying rooms. At the top of the hill lies a huge ‘plant’ which leaves are the structure for terraces and most importantly house solar panels, to produce clean energy. this Idea was probably one of the main concept that ruled the planning path. If we look at the plan of the city of Washington we see some important axes. All this directions meet at one point. This is the center of the plant that produces clean energy from renewable resources and the point of connection with the indoors rooms of the White House. It is also the point of the center of the current building. To think the USA President’s residence as an example of green building, in a broad sense, may be an ideal change. The new American President could think different.
