The new district Europaallee Zurich, close to the Central Station, is one of the major development projects of the Swiss Federal Railways SBB. Plot H is the last of eight sites, and faces the small scale of Langstrasse quarter. The project for the mixed-use building aims to set new standards for urban sustainability and a pioneering role in establishing Zurich’s 2000-watt society. The complex will house apartments, retail, gastronomy, and office spaces. Along the Langstrasse the 25h designhotel will decisively mark its presence. The project will comply with the Swiss Minergie P-Eco Standard and will be among the first buildings in Europe to operate with zero CO2 emission. Energy sources (for heating and cooling) are sun, rain water, and the waste heat. The ecological goals include socio-cultural aspects and integrate services, affordable commercial premises, and public spaces that are linked to the adjacent neighborhood.

Architectural concept
A sculptural figure is developed which corresponds to the density of the previously developed plots. Above the three-story base building, which refers to the scale of the surrounding buildings, rise two high-rise structures. The hotel, designed as a solitary volume, completes the sculptural figure. In its position, the hotel simultaneously marks the beginning and the end of the new Europaallee district. The hotel’s ample forecourt connects to the old district. The facades are developed according to the internal program (hotel, office space, apartments, restaurants, retail).
