The project area is placed on a complex landscape, where both the natural and artificial elements concur to make a mixed tissue defined by the presence of different infrastructures(vehicular/ pedestrians/bike paths/rails) and various urban density, related to the two cities of Gorizia and Nova Gorica. This kind of complexity has driven the composition process towards non standard models. The Cartesian concept was not suitable to the essence of the area, having a rigid and strong characterization and no flexibility. These considerations led us to choice a project approach based on a non deterministic model, through the adoption of a stochastic algorithm, the Voronoi diagram, to solve the landscape design. Voronoi diagram is a special kind of decomposition of a metric space determined by distances to a specified discrete set of objects in the space, in this case by a discrete set of points. These points were determined by defining all the elements we wanted to have an importance in the future area. We pointed all the buildings around the area, so that the new landscape will be generated directly by the existing one, being strongly in relation with the different densities adjacent the project area. Then we applied the Voronoi algorithm, obtaining a subdivision of the space based on it. We decided to apply an interpolation on the Voronoi island to have a smooth solution. Once we had the new topography we decided the functions of each island, obtaining the final design. The project area was considered to be a park where both the existing and the new buildings are treated as part of a green system. The new complex of the Youth Centre, a central position in the area, consists of seven buildings, which aggregate around open spaces, creating a constellation of constructed. The mathematical process that stay behind the composition allows a result that gives a strong relation between small and big scale, that take into account the points of view at different positions, both inside and outside the area. The new park is an open space where there are all activities related to leisure, recreation, culture, sports. The Voronoi Islands become green islands, designed as rooms or enclosures of trees, with picnic areas, linked by cycle and pedestrian paths. These ones are made up of hard materials, such as mineral, gravel and pebbles treated with resin. The central spaces are completely treated with smooth concrete and can be customized by a moving seats system. The program provide the construction of a high quality hotel, a Youth Centre, a kindergarten, a Soundstage, a House of Music, a Hostel and a Research Centre through the demolition of the existing buildings which can’t be reused or restructured. All the operations are characterized by the use of biocompatible and sustainable material and technologies, with particular attention paid to the use of alternative energy sources. Their forms are the ones of the Voronoi Island on which they lay, so that the configuration is smooth and gives always different perspective and peculiar points of view. The facades are treated as self-supporting steel curtain wall made up by a strip of different colored glasses, that allows the enlargement and multiplying of the space they enclose. The roof is flat with a green system, blending architectural requirements and environmental ecology. The versatility of the urban plan allows to graduate in the time the interventions, basing on the availability of resources.
