A day at the museum

1_concept__large

We had thought to go and visit the museum. The just opened extension work curiously roused my interest. The first images on the web of such a strange structure, the WORM, reminded me an overcast day , a grey and snowy sky. Today is the perfect day.

I am getting near the old building, the worm has completely filled in leaving the perception of the ancient prospect intact. I am going along the flight taking to the inside and slowly worming its way ( oppure slipping into) into the new structure, step by step, I see the figures before me disappearing and then reappearing straight afterwards. I am excited and curious, this is not only an entrance, it is a urban knot as probably is the whole architectonical structure. The reception opens a perspective towards the outside, towards the conference hall in a continuum and crescendo, a lung of space projected outside. Just in time to perceive the light reflected by water and soon the darkening curtains englobe me into the event. The movie is starting : “ A clock-work orange” …. Coincidence ….maybe not ! I am coming back into the compression, I am underneath, completely underneath, the space reminds me of a quarry ( cave) , I perceive a natural light which increases in intensity as the difficult breathing of whom, forced in a narrow passage, regains wideness and space. The exhibition rooms seem extruded from the walls, the floor, the ceiling as in a scenic sequence : Getulio Alviani, frequencies, texture, dynamic plots The morphing of the left wall contrasts with the fluid and flow of the course which drives you further. Further…The big hall, nearly a place for the celebration of the grandeur of this, that, a few, many….maybe….or a place to exchange…. a boulevard which becomes the meeting point of memory, poetry, art and the author himself, or better, the genus of the author: the man. The light on the background is thick, as thick as material but impalpable as the air. The snow, water and trees……you can nearly catch the odour of nature because the limit is broken and even without realizing it, you find yourself plunged into the watching, the watching of yourself who is, in turn, passed and passing through .

4_concept__large

The teacher told me to draw the museum we have visited today. It is difficult to draw a museum but the teacher told us that we had to represent the museum as a story, a tale of images. What do I remember of the museum? What do I remember of what happened while we were going along that strange building? First of all, it is really a strange building. It seems to disappear into the ground like a worm, but a worm where you can get into. There are not real and appropriate rooms, it is like a big gallery or a wide road where people walk slowly. I felt like running and reaching the end of that road. So, I started drawing a road where people are,….yes, I am among them and it does not seem there is much to do there but there are so many things to see. I cut out some images from the pages of a magazine and I placed them along the road with the people. The images are as big as the road and at the end of the road…….at the end of the road the sounds of nature, the colours of nature, the green of the trees, the dark ground, the water with its reflections. I Have nearly finished my drawing, it is similar to a geography atlas, a place in which all the signs of earth, from the natural ones to those built by man, are represented: mountains, lakes, trees, buildings and also the acting of man. This is My museum!

Grouped in a system of signs and by means of a dream, with these stories ,we wanted to represent the museum as a daily experience of an adult and a child. If on one hand the suggestion of the adult in the story causes some reactions in the reader through the complexity of the word, the simplicity of the images of the drawing represented by the child may suggest the idea of an architectural place as a simple object of the daily experience and therefore read as images. The Project, which maybe will never have a real dimension, in this representation, provocatively affirms that “ the only possible journey now seams to be inside the signs, the images also in a conceptual form and not only in a virtual one (render) in what we define the destruction of direct experience”.

Features of the Project

7_concept__large

Besides working on the site, the particularity of the structure allows the use of prefabricated systems with dry technology. The basement section and the part completely filled in ,could be realized in reinforced concrete while for the external part it will be used a system consisting of a steel and wooden frame. The filled in part will be realized with an air space structure in order to favour the insulation and the system of canalization. The part of the structure with the steel and wooden frame will have to be realized with an external carter of composite white marble slabs on an aluminium alveolar panel, packet of heat insulation in the air space and inner lining in different materials panels ( a. nautical plywood –b wallboard- c micro-perforated aluminium panels) in relation with the specific functions of the various part of the gallery. Moreover, the support structure will have to house the wirings and canalizations in such a way to assure the best flexibility. The structure with air space favours, besides the isolation with the external environment, a perception of internal spaces devoid of any planting structures absolutely avoiding the least element of volume alteration. This permits to assure the possibility of an external fitting until the physical and visual margins of the internal space. The internal space is, in fact, thought as a continuum, a big gallery or street where events happen and where the meeting takes place according to a precise scenic sequence. Even the spaces individuated in the first part of the exhibition area, could be removed and/or replaced , modified in their geometry and assembling without binding the expressive possibility of the project of an hypothetical setting out. The structure has got an extremely simple distributive-layout scheme. The entrance is identified in front of the present one and through a ramp the initiation to the experience of life takes place. Since we have surveyed the presence of a street suitable for vehicles ( a link to a cottage), through a cut, the structure shapes a passage, a urban knot which determines the second entrance ( lift and stairs) as well as the entrance to the restaurant.

The choices

9_concept__large

We have provocatively entitled our structure “ The worm” but this long cave, gallery or road wants to interact with different themes, not in a distinguishing way but making them indissoluble. The respect of the building, the continuity of the spaces in just one plane, the autonomy of the offices and at the same time the close relation with the supply activity of the museum, the opening towards the landscape and at the same time the necessary isolation from the natural light, the concept of the project simply shows its intention to realize a urban knot, not only and exclusively a space for the museum activity, not only an icon in the landscape, but an occasion for people to meet, exchange ideas and establish relationships among them.
