ENVIRONMENTAL APPROACH In a land where the variety and the particularity of natural elements gives strong lifestyle’ conditions, the relationship between earth and water signs precise dual relationship in which both the elements gives mutual conditions. The edge that marks this relationship produces different and particular landscapes. Just in this area we can find the existing Joenniemi Manor as a barycentric point on the land. The static composition between the manor and the surrounding park guaranties landscape importance creating a complex situation with unquestioned territorial qualities that it’s possible to extend over the property edges. Following this wide view of the context, Taavetinsaari island is a complementary element of the manor-park system. Thinking to the earth-water duality, is possible to see the island as the liquid part of the landscape that enrich with new meanings the “classical” original structure. The design approach making the Serlachius museum extension begin from the territorial reading of the place: the Manor is on the centre of the peninsula and fix a reference point to the wide scale organizing the open space in a complementary way to the built space. The new extension will become a landmark integrated with the natural existing landscape. The open space will manage the relationship between the different scale of approach creating a strong experience linked to the place and the new museum spaces.

GENERAL STRATEGY The general idea of the project is based on territorial and local scale principles. In the reciprocal relationship between the earth and the Joenniemi Manor we tried to involve the lake surface for a more territorial influence. Inner land and lake surface become meaningful for the new idea of the entire museum and for the geographical influence. Two strong polarities with their individual values takes place for the design idea: the two focal points are the Joenniemi Manor and the Taavetinsaari island. Following the general competition criteria, part of the new extension is built in the east side of the existing park area and the other part, linked with the main entrance is on the island trying to respect the naturalism of the place. In that reciprocal dialogue earth-water, the original museum and the new extension will become one landscape entity creating a strong experience between old and new.

ARCHITECTURAL IDEA The main entrance building is a linear volume – with low high – placed on the edge between the vehicular road and the existing park east area. The direction, parallel to the coast and to the main settlement, become an urban sign: transitional ement between the external approach to the museum and the inner spaces. Following the path from the parching area and the main entrance, the long building come with the visitors to the square in front of Joenniemi Manor that become the place where new and old architectural language can dialogue. The new entrance foyer is a big transparent façade that introduce the visitors to the inner spaces. From that place is possible to enter directly to the existing collections in Joenniemi Manor or going to the new exposition facilities. Beyond the foyer, in the linear building, over the ground level the administrative block take place ending to the east side with a cantilever protected and private terrace. The conference room, the collection facilities and part of the services are partially underground and following the slope of the ground they are open facing the lake east side with beautiful views to the Taavetinsaari island.

From the underground foyer is possible to reach a protected pathway that become the bridge to the island. The design criteria for the island exhibition facilities is linked to the previous territorial concepts: the idea to keep the naturalism of the island with new architecture making suggestions from the landscape art experiences. To transform a natural element, open to the surrounding context, in one interior keeping its character and formal aspect but changing its perception creating a special experience beyond the museum function.

The idea is to walk on the border of the island in which earth and water playing a special role and fix there the new building that in some parts is close for the exhibition facilities and in other parts is open to the external view and to the internal wild space. This building is sensible to the different situations of the island. It is based partially on the rock soil and partially inside the water with lake dwelling structures. The expositions facilities and the restaurant are placed on the north-east side facing the building on the earth and Joenniemi Manor. On the opposite side, to north, directly linked with a bridge to the main road are the storage and the collection’s treatment facilities. On the south side, in a calm context is the new sauna building with a light pathway that passing trough the forest become a special point of view (mirador) in the lake. The internal form of the building is adapting itself to the natural asperity of the island orography: on that side the services spaces are linked to a dirt road. The external form of the building is more free and become fluid, smooth, floating on the water: the man gesture over the nature. The two buildings – earth and water – are complementary and inseparable entities: the first one give welcome to the visitors and to the workers, for this reason is precise, with clean form and respectful with the existing park. The second is more free form, accepting the presence of the water and using the island forest for address new experiences and special points of view to the inner and outer landscape.
