In the inner city of West Berlin, an unusual meeting-point was created which encourages the discovery of new sports while transcending conventional rules and regulations. Sunk one-and-a-half metres into the ground and lined with colourful retaining walls, fences and enclosures, it resembles more a compact play-box than a conventional playground. A high wall of curved, pre-cast concrete elements marks the playgrounds boundary with the sky above. The coloured, rubberized tartan-surface is not limited to the ground, but also covers the sides of the playing area. Overlapping and dynamically distorted markings offer the players an unconventional set of rules which can be negotiated for each match; the sporting activity turns into a discourse on the game. This slight oscillation in the feeling of security is replicated in the surrounding wire-mesh fence, erected in two layers to create a stimulating moiré effect. Not merely a fence, it is a wall, albeit transparent. As such, the entrance ramp between two fence walls also provides entrée into an unconventional approach to games and sport.
