The project is based on the urban context and the contemporary social housing themes, density, sustainability and social-functional mix. The design choise takes origin from the sixties residential settlements features in this part of the city (Harar-Dessié neighborhood), rethinking the Milan experience of those years. At the urban scale the system is clear and recognizable: the settlement system is based on the dialectic between a compact multi-storey building in line and fragmented low density houses, which are arranged respectively along via Gabetti at north and via Domokos, ideally taken as reference design matrices.

Two different densities and types generate two different ways of living: from one hand the ‘horizontal skyscraper’, typical of a collective dimension like a new ‘unitè d’habitation’ ; to the other hand the ‘insulae’, the houses for two or three families, recalling instead a more ‘rural’ dimension, individual, with a suburban character typical of small ‘country house’ that draws a different pattern. This system provides for the exploitation of all available space center for the public functions required for the community and the city. Public open space is composed of different green areas and a new urban pathway, where are the urban facilities, and for the residential buildings that cross all the area.

The open space is completed by a strip of urban agricoltrural neighborhood gardens and a large playground. The project has addressed the issue of environmental sustainability through an energy strategy that, ensuring the achievement of the B CENED energetic building class, using innovative and standardized low thermal transmittance materials and adopting a proper plant system, reduces CO ² emissions, costs and maintenance.
