The Glass Museum in Ebeltoft houses an extensive collection of contemporary glass, based on art works of more than 600 internationally recognised glass artists from all over the world. The Glass Museum was established in 1985 and is situated in the former Customs and Excise House, and has needed more space for some time.

The extension improves possibilities for exhibitions and arrangements, and it is situated carefully to preserve the existing sight lines from the old town of Ebeltoft towards the bay. The architecture is light and simple. Discretely it plays along with the theme of glass, while providing a calm setting for the colourful and expressive glass art.

The extension is constituted by a double high exhibition building, a glass hut with workshops and museum garden surrounded by a wall. The north face of the building displays white washed brickwork and vertical glass panels. Large glass panels towards the museum garden opens up and diminishes the boundary between outside and inside.

The main entrance leads to the new exhibition building. From here, connection is made at ground level to the existing museum, and the seamless flow continues into the museum garden. The garden opens towards the sky, while the garden wall encompasses the space and protects outdoor exhibitions. The tour can be extended by a fascinating visit inside the glass hut. This workshop serves both as an active exhibition and as a working place for invited artists. After this hot visit, one may wish to return to the café in the exhibition building and enjoy the magnificent view of the sea and the old ship harbour.
