The library as a link: a materialization of the abstraction of saviour, the library functions as the relation between the intellectual activity of our society and the concrete contexte in wich it takes place. Considering the possibilities of multimedia-communication and the new dimension of possible exchange in the virtual space, a contemporary library may correspond to a door to infinity of our social, urban and technical structure, containing a dimension far beyond its physical impact, a presence that cannot be materialized.

As link between virtual space and concrete structure, traditional knowledge and future decoveries, apprentice and developpement, the library is a porche to the world and at the same time firmly anchered in its urban space.

The site in Berlin-Mitte is a very specific place. The direct environment is characterized by the historical developpement, the sites central situation and the superposition of multiple traffic axes: pedestrians, cyclists, automobilists and the train. Urban density specifies the site.

In order to give the library its status of a free and open place, we found it fundamental to preserve the urban space. That is why the proposition for the new library functions in two steps: the building searches at the surface for discretion in order to develope itself generously under the earth.

The positioning of an elegant line along the fire-wall on the sites backside liberates the place in front of it. The relation between the building and the train is expressed in form of an open urban space that integrates the historical context. As a screen reflecting the typical berlin landscape the building assumes its presence as a sign without being imposing.

In the earth the building takes the typical volumetric language of a classic library: all its activities are centered in an evident order around the central lecture space.
