The site development “Park am Aabach” creates a new recreational and residential area based on the existing and hidden identity and character of the place. The particular location of the area on the Aabach waterbank and the history of the stream; including its transformation, play a significant role in the project. Especially, those changes which result from industrialization (factory buildings, artificial channels, water-power stations) and characterize the area in order to become the ground for the new arrangement. The Park itself is an important part of the concept of the town´s recreational axis along the Aabach stream and – in a bigger scale – a component of the conurbation of Zürich. The strategy follows the study done by Krokodil group regarding the urban and landscape development of Glatttal; meaning that a new settlement project is to be energetically neutral (geothermics and water) with the activation of green surrounding areas . The Aabach is the backbone of the public spaces in Uster. It connects 3 park areas (ZAG-Park, Stadtpark and Park am Aabach) inside the town and leads further upstream to the Oberusterwald forest and downstream to the Greifensee lake. Parts of this axis include some existing fragments of the industrial trail of Zürcher Oberland. The distinct industrialized landscape, legible in Aabach´s channeling, is the criterion for the new planning. Like the spatial structure of Uster town, the waterbank changes between the urban built and rural landscape areas.
