For ten days, Braunschweigs Municipal Theater becomes the venue for Theaterformen, a two-yearly international festival. The task of creating a festival center with a meeting place, program information, ticket sales, library, and a small café is interpreted in a new way: the theaters ballroom, located upstairs and normally reserved for the audience during intermissions, is converted temporarily into a festival center. For ten days, this introverted inner space, unknown to many local people, becomes a freely accessible public place. Independently of theater performances, the center plays host to a mixed crowd, drawn in part by live projections of World Cup soccer matches.

The structural intervention consists of erecting a broad staircase on a framework of scaffolding that can be assembled/dismantled within two days, connecting the square in front of the theater to the balcony of the ballroom. Tall steps for sitting at the center of the south-facing staircase make it a grandstand during the daytime. The view follows the prominent street axis between the theater, set in the historical ramparts, and Braunschweigs old town. During the festival, audiences enter and leave the theater directly via the steps. The red carpet used on the staircase and in the ballroom becomes both an invitation and an emblem for the festival, visible from afar.
