Nursery and primary school 'La Falguera'

11_large

The grounds are located on an upland area. Looking from afar, the building emerges from the pine top trees below. That is the reason why the deep pine green colour was chosen, so that the building blends in with the environment. This was accomplished because the material used enables any colour from the RAL chart to be chosen without any additional cost. The relatively complex terrain of the grounds and the fact that only half its area could be used to built the whole programme for the school were the main constraints. The existing school, in the form of prefabricated huts, was located in the other half. Afterwards that space will be used for the outdoor playgrounds. Due to all these constraints, the resulting building somehow surrounded itself in a reversed U-shaped section. It faces south in order to meet the direction and light requirements. This resulting U-shaped section consists of two ground-floor blocks facing east an west respectively and a third linking block with ground floor and two more floors upstairs wich face towards the south providing the indoor programme with facings appropriate for its use. The building was set away from the north and west ends of the grounds with the purpose of obtaining a spacious open area which made the school more attractive. Each entrance to the various areas, its uses and programmes are separate and do not interfere with the smooth running of the centre. The centre is organised on the ground floor which boasts areas for general services, infant school and sports. The rest of the floors house the primary classrooms, the staff rooms and other classrooms with a special design. The whole design was located on both sides of a central corridor which matches the size and facing direction of the rooms. There are open areas between the rooms and the corridor, thus creating greater flexibility of use. These open spaces in the corridor can be noticed from the outside, as they correspond with large hollows on the section’s southern façade.
