The site suggested us the main idea to develop our design: since the beginning our clear intention has been not to propose just a building but a part of the landscape, an open space system where the building can re-activate the surrounding void. Architecture is intended as a natural extension of the landscape: the project, inspired by land-art works, creates an immersive experience among art, nature and architecture. Walking through the landscape means exploring the museum, going through the museum means immerging into the landscape; the outdoor areas are in fact a natural extension of interiors. The building designs and structures a new natural landscape, which integrates the existing one. The open spaces will perfectly integrate the new part with the old one; a system of ramps, walks and gardens are also “solving” the different heights of the slope (due to the ground topography). The placement of the building within the site is dictated by the desire to minimize the clear-cutting of the existing trees. The pre-existing buildings, the villa, the restaurant and the pavilions constitute a widespread system, a series of fragments with different importance; the new museum is composed of three Corten steel volumes arranged in a way to consolidate this system, enhancing the relationship system among the various elements. The offices and museum spaces have different orientations, they dialogue with the open space and constitute its ideal extension. The space that holds all the elements together, the very heart of the project, is the plaza at the same level of the entrance to the villa, which stands above the foyer. The new heart of the museum works on two superimposed levels: – an open heart: the square which structures and holds together all the volumes, the Joenniemi manor, the new museum and the existing pavilions. – a closed heart: the foyer, connecting all the old and new exhibition spaces, the offices, the restaurant and the storage areas.
