description of the process The path that has lead to the final configuration of the master plan commenced from considering the Ales station not as a closed-off portion, but rather as a “generator element”. This is because it is impossible for us to disregard a vision that considers the intervention as an opportunity, stimulus and resource for the development and change of an entire urban area. Porvoo, the challenges The initial approach focused on the general conditions of the setting. Former industrial area, area industriale, in the North-West area of the Porvoo centre. The Site is delimited through the river Porvoonjoki, the highway 7 (E 18, \Helsinki_St. Petersburg), and the surrounding dwelling districts. The Site finds its place in the historical river landscape. The Porvoonjoki Valley is a wide place, but physically distinct from the other part of the town, narrowed between the river Provoonjoki in the South-East area area, and the highway in the North area. Actually separated from the town life, the presence of the railway, partially operatine, limits a normal development process. smaller and connect the new residential dwellings to the parks and the pre-existing dwellings, the new quarter both to the historical centre and to the “Castle hill” Linnamäki. It is a space that will have its own identity, where the use of cars is completely abandoned, in favour of pedestrian or bicycle networks. It will be a centre designed for persons, an Eco-Neighbourhood that will be an example identified in the sustainable development homes as a social pole that attracts. It is a recovery of the freedom to stroll that has been sacrificed by those who have no appropriate place to do so. The process of suburbs has almost totally eliminated this manner of moving about. To obtain such a thing, it is undeniable that the only possible solution is one that of new connections between the project area and the old town, reappropriating the territory by means of space and road joints following a strong trace, hinging on the old station to expand itself in the creation of glimpes, sights, relationships between existing and new tissues, a sole motor to sustain a complete redevelopment of the project area and the city, both from a transportation point of view and an economic one. The opportunity given thanks to the new building development is of absolute importance for the development of the city that, reorganising itself around the emergence of the new quarter, will appropriate the centrifugal and centripetal functions that are typical of the urbanised core. Promoting new turistical-residential flows through a new and greater public mobility and collective transport means, it could become the cross-point of important communication ways. It involves redesigning all the abandoned areas in an urban parks viewpoint, generating a residential system at a sustainable urban scale. One could outfit the new community and the city itself a structured range of parks, a sequential system of ample green-themed fragments of gardens alternated with urbanised zones carrying a typical “new rural” mark. A complex articulation that foresees the dualism between public spaces that are large and open, and closed, private fragmented spaces. In this way, together, public and private insert themselves in the existing city, sewing a zipper onto the micro-infrastructures that vivify the project area, developing a network of transversal routes that are
