CONCORSO DI IDEE PER LA REALIZZAZIONE DELLE ARCHITETTURE DI SERVIZIO DEL SITO DI EXPO MILANO 2015

7º CLASSIFICATO

Alfredo Vozmediano — CONCORSO DI IDEE PER LA REALIZZAZIONE DELLE ARCHITETTURE DI SERVIZIO DEL SITO DI EXPO MILANO 2015

Service Areas distributed throughout the space occupied by the Expo will have a key role for visitors and will be responsible for the comfort and functionality of the services. They will be highly symbolic and consistent with the laboratory of social, cultural and design issues that will be the Expo 2015, a place that offers answers and shows possible paths towards sustainable development as well as responsible and harmonious growth for the future. Service areas will be repeated unit cells in Expo’s plan; they will grow into spaces that guarantee quality of life by providing a different and responsible understanding and construction formulas of public buildings, following the criteria of sustainability. Sustainability goes beyond the mere identification of technological models to be applied to buildings; it is a social sustainability (essential for everyday life), seen through the lens of aesthetic sustainability (aesthetic and sensitive quality of places) made possible by technical sustainability (construction, installation and dismantling of buildings as part of a unique process consistently designed) and rational use of energy, and by technological sustainability (to imagine the building as autonomous producer and supplier of energy to the network for community profit, that incorporates water conservation, building of internal microclimates and creation of sound, tactile and olfactory indoor quality). The proposed Service Areas represent a project focused on mankind and its boundless curiosity, creating a space for meeting and exchange of experiences and emotions.

The intent of the proposal is to leave, after the closure of Expo Milan 2015, only those traces which contribute in some way to their host territory. The plan is to build without producing waste difficult to recycle or recover. In the project, the box is used as a “container of something”. The great advantage provided by these box-elements is the variety of content that they can accommodate, as well as the portability of both the box-container and everything it contains, protected by its outer casing.

The development of the projected Service Areas buildings comes from the small-scale box-container multiplied to create unique box-buildings containing a variety of uses and energy resources. The box is here the most simple, modern and versatile of potential containers, reusable as a skin and “multi-usable” for possible present and future uses. All the architectural intervention is based on the idea of box, mobility, versatility of use, delivery, assembly, dismantling and reuse, minimizing the energy used for its creation. Starting from the idea of the ephemeral, mobile and traceless condition of architecture, we conceive the installation of separate box-elements that allow the permeation of circulation along the linear buildings. The use of each box will follow the program outlined for the Service Areas. The boxes are multifunctional, with a flexible interior layout to fit the demands of use.

The linear building shall consist of a series of independent, separated volumes (boxes). All these elements will share a unitary language, easily identifiable. Modulation facilitate the location and moving of any item. The process is designed to be materialized before the established deadline, so we have opted for lighweight construction with prefabricated materials, and for limited diversity of material in order to obtain a simple and functional result and to optimize resources. Everything set out to significantly reduce the ecological footprint of the intervention.

The cardboard box idea as such is radicalized to the extreme, both in terms of form and material. Therefore, the main material would be cardboard; this encompasses the generating concept and the use of a recyclable, environmentally friendly and reusable material. The mixture of cardboard, wood and metal structure results in the projected box. There are some noteworthy aspects in the merging of the formal concept and the functional concept. Ones of them are the flaps or covers of volumes, open boxes in which whatever are happening will be gradually discovered. The flaps will adopt various functions, harbor facilities (solar panels, machinery, ventilation systems etc…), provide covered and shadowed areas on the terraces, and crown the volumes. The other noteworthy aspect is the identification of the major openings in the façade with the terraces, patios and large areas to be illuminated.

Importantly, the constructive and egalitarian simplicity of all elements can simplify the process and run the installation without too much machinery, without specialized labor and resulting in a rapid assembly and dismantling, as a Meccano, always using lightweight construction.
