Ópera de Busan

Desde_el_mar_paco_nueva_large

We think that the Busan Opera House building will make it a mandatory reference point in the city of Busan will undoubtedly contribute to its predominant Cultural use and specially its unique location in the North Port. The scale of the intervention is not only measured by the size of the needed space referent to a specific program, but also for the scale of the city which receive this activity essentially metropolitan. The Busan Opera House will be more than a first-class urban facility. It will belong more to the geographical setting of the city of Busan and surroundings than the specific location in the island of Marine Culture.

The building is situated on a platform. It distributes the access into three different areas: Opera, Theater and Convention Center. This platform solves the access bridge, within the shopping center is located and platform areas of the theater and opera at the same level of the stages accessible to traffic from the common central bridge. On this platform the building which contains the halls is installed, with an appreciable horizontal development that projects it into the sea, reminding the existing piers of the commercial ports so characteristic of this coast.

According to it, the proposal is based in two elements well differentiated: Plinth and Building

The plinth is not only the element that stabilizes the building structurally and also formally, but mainly is the element that links it with the city, creating a public plan, an urban place, a meeting place. Bringing its presence with the inmediate environment of the smaller scale buildings.

It consists in five elements that solve these important functional aspects: 1-Access perron Not only links the city floor with the the level of the upper plaza of access, but it is conceived as a public space at different levels with scenic possibilities. 2-Maritime seaside It is designed as an open and covered seafront that runs along the Shopping Center perimeter and it is in front of the marina. We pretend to stablish a formal parallelism with the future building. 3-Inside edge Towards the north-facing, on the unoccupied lot is set at the island level linked to the city by a road bridge, which we use to allow road access and maneuverability of big trucks. In this edge the loading and unloading bay are place, also Theater, Opera and Convention Center storage spaces. Another one independent to the Shopping Center. 4-Upper main square It is situated on the platform, “public square” where you enter the building. We think that is more achievable to renounce a common lobby on the ground floor that would act mainly as a distributor, in favour of the interior Foyers that would act more like hospitality towards spaces necessary for intermissions and other activities. 5-Patios We drill the platform with patios and escalators that solve the natural lighting and access from the shopping center to the upper main square.

The building, unlike the plinth, is conceived as an autonomous piece belonging to the urban skyline more than to the specific site where it is located. We want the building World be a landmark of the city, so we compare it with other iconic existing buldings and also in progress.

Undertaking the project of the building, we have done several models that were gradually approaching the structural and compositional values we wanted to propose.

Its spatial configuration depend on several decisions: -Location of Foyers. The one downstairs for Theaters, faced to the city and closer to it, north facing and the other one for convention located upperstairs south-facing. -Stage halls unified. This would allowed the creation of a resistant concrete core. -A great size corbel that projects it into the sea, reminding the existing piers of the commercial ports so characteristic of this coast. -Materiality is another important issue. We would like a materiality setting that conveys a certain lightness. The closure is planned as a series of parallel plates that will adapt to the geometry of the enclosure. These sheets are painted tubular steel sections that will contribute to tie structurally the whole group. For the approaching and representation of the building´s materiality have developed two models, a general model of the building (1:500 scale) made of painted plexiglass that allows interior lighting and a detail one of the lower theater´s hall (1:200 scale) that allowed to observe the effect of the natural light coming in. We believe that the photographic study of these two models is close to our searh of the material behavior for this building.

Inside it holds four areas: Opera, Theater, Convention Center and compatible areas. These areas are organized by direction (Opera to the North. Theather and Convention Center to the South) and by configuration (Opera and theather in vertical and Conventions in horizontal).
