FUNCTIONAL LAY OUT

The new spaces required for the new library are allocated in two wings of seven levels, all cut by a tilted plan finished as garden landscape. The plan visually joins the level of the city with the rear hill to reduce the visual impact of the new volumes and it is cut by three glass canyons to convey inside the light and the heat of the sun. A great covered public square, a central landmark, is the physical and symbolic point of convergence of all the working/public spaces. In this area are the reception, the restaurant, the vertical connections and the news area. On the Odengaten street the new building is open by a shopping mall on a basement terrace. The top floor of the new library is directly connected to the hills park through the cafè. On the sides of the new building are the required connections to the existing library and to the shopping centre and the access of vehicles and goods.

The strongest sign of identification of the project is the huge glass prism, it breaks the hill and projects itself over the street : new unmistakable icona of the city. Nature, symbolized by the large tilted plan, brings the garden from the hill into the city. A clear and sharp crystal is the symbol of the never-ending action of human reason. Inside this crystal a changing landscape generated by the morphologic encounter of the two worlds : nature/reason. The suspended reticulum is the only element escaped from the rigid geometries of written culture : symbol of the changeable mediatic universe.
