Given the complexity of the new library program as well as the delicacy of the architectural topic and of the insertion in the historical context, our project is divided in three different parts as far as the functional plan and that of strictly architectural choices are concerned: Asplund’s library, the basement of the new building, the tower. From the point of view of function: a specialized library of arts and aestethics, a wide open space connected to the city and intended to the complementary public functions, a tower solely dedicated to books and reading. From the point of view of architecture: the ancient buiding, preserved in its volumetrical and spatial integrity, a wide green platform, penetrating between town and hillside, nearly disappearing into nature, a stereometrically pure volume. This choice brings as a consequence on the plan of distribution, the rationalization of all different entrances and pathways (staff, books and wares, visitors), and on the plan of management, the possibility to set up an articulated organization of modes and times of work of the different parts (library, restaurant-bar-news zone, auditorium). From the point of view of the architectural topic, that of the library, our project faces the characters which in history defined it, and in particular with its being at the same time a wharehouse, a storage, and a representative public building. The new library displays on three fronts the appearance of a storehaus, like a huge granary whit its lighting and ventilation openings, while on the fourth, which is opposite to Asplund’s entrance and turned towards the new urban centrality, opens itself like the loggia of a palace. On the plan of the insertion in the historical context, the result is a complex which doesn’t confront with Asplund’s architecture and doesn’t modify it (with the exception of a logistic and technical connection), but tries to establish with it and with the monumental pre-existances (observatory and cathedral) a volumetrical relationship in the distance.
