Located on the border of the cities of Porto and Matosinhos, an area characterized by its past industrial activity and suburban type of occupation, where the presence of the new metro system allows access to the whole area and contributes to the general requalifing towards urban qualities, the Multifunctional building of the Serralves Foundation is considered as a fundamental piece on this process. The building general composition emphasises its urban character, standing in the middle of a new plaza that consolidates the pedestrian public space in a continuous way aiming to generate a new urban public centre. The centre of the volumetric composition is the main atrium, receiving the public of exhibition spaces at the ground level (Serralves) and the basement level (Textile Industries Nucleus); continuing the archetypical shape of the preserved volume, the central foyer gives internal orientation to the public and allows different perspectives towards the exhibition and leisure/shopping areas. In contrast with the massive base, the big translucent storage cube reflects the ambiguities of the program, which claims for closed box and open spaces and houses administration, education and service areas. With a unified look given by the glass, the different types of façades will integrate the different volumes taking into account the special requests of generating a glowing object, a sort of lantern, at night. This type of façade could be complemented with a number of media devices that could offer approaches to the experience of art and communication.
