The Station and beyond

The Birmingham Gateway scheme will give passengers the station they deserve and allow even more people to travel in comfort to and from the city centre than every before. The station will be accessible throughout and open to all sides of the city centre.

But the redevelopment isn’t just about the station: this investment will help regenerate parts of Birmingham city centre and create thousands of jobs in the area.

World-class ambitions

Our aim is to give Birmingham a world-class station boasting highlights such as:

• Room for even more passengers to use the station in comfort

• More accessible, brighter and clearer platforms,    with 42 new escalators and 14 new lifts

• A grand concourse that is three and a half times bigger than at present,    and which is enclosed by a spectacular, giant, light-filled atrium

• An iconic new station façade, building on Birmingham’s growing tradition    of leading-edge design

• Better links to and through the station for pedestrians, with eight new entrances

• The stimulus for the physical regeneration of the areas surrounding    the station leading to the potential creation of over 10,000 new jobs    across the city

Keeping services running

As services have become faster and more reliable in recent years, more people are using the railways than ever before. At New Street alone 120,000 people use the station every day. That’s double the amount who used it when the station was last rebuilt in 1967.

And there’s more to come, with increasing numbers of people choosing to leave the car at home and use the train instead.

Our plans are vital to allow us to meet that growing demand and mean the station should be able to cope with the increase in passenger numbers for at least 30 to 40 years.

Part of the master plan

The New Street project is an essential part of the Birmingham City Council master plan, which is a concerted effort to develop more business opportunities, increase tourism and enhance the city’s image as a whole.

Cllr Mike Whitby, Leader of Birmingham City Council, is leading this £25bn plan and has placed the redevelopment of New Street at the heart of this strategy.

The economic benefits of the redevelopment will be over £2.3bn.
