España será el primero de los cuatro países en donde se instalarán centros para el nuevo sistema de control de tráfico aéreo por satélite, basado en la constelación europea de 30 satélites Galileo. Situado en las afueras de Madrid, el edificio debe albergar este sistema de navegación, los sistemas centralizados del control convencional y otros sistemas internacionales relacionados con el tráfico aéreo.

Es un edificio abierto al vasto paisaje de Torrejón. Un plano de vidrio desborda la fachada y asume el gesto de las amplias vistas sobre el llano y sobre los vuelos de las poderosas aeronaves que utilizan las pistas cercanas.

Es también un edificio abierto al cielo. Una fisura paralela a la fachada de vidrio baña durante el día los espacios interiores con luz natural controlada y permite durante la noche la visión del cielo estrellado. Es la referencia permanente a los vuelos y a los satélites.

Las cubiertas son la prolongación de los taludes existentes y de algunos de los recorridos peatonales que en este momento conviven en el solar. Así, la cubierta es continuación del propio terreno, la continuación del llano y del paisaje. Es la construcción de los tejados que se convierten en la Meseta, la bella metáfora que Sánchez Ferlosio propuso para Madrid.

Spain is to become the first of the four countries in which the new stations for satellite controlled air-traffic – based on the teaming of 30 Galileo satellites – will be housed. Located on the outskirts of Madrid, the building should house this new guidance system, the centralised conventional system and other international systems related to air-traffic control.

It is a building opening onto the vast landscape of Torrejón. A glass plane overflows the façade and looks out on at the broad views over the open plain and the flights of the powerful aeroplanes that use the nearby runways.

It’s also a building open to the sky. A parallel slit to the glass façade bathes the internal spaces with controlled daylight and allows views of the starry night. It is a constant reference to flights and satellites.

The roofing is a prolongation of the banks and some of the paths already existing on site. Thus the roof is a continuation of the terrain, the continuation of the plain and landscape. It’s the construction of the roofs that turns them into a plateau, the beautiful metaphor that Sánchez Ferlosio proposed for Madrid.
