Henrietta Street Competition

Hs-final-south-perspec_1__large

The approach taken is to treat all of Henrietta Street as a piece of art, with the No.16 site as the ‘missing tooth’ of an overall scheme. The massing of the new buildings at the East end of Henrietta Street has added to its documented “unwelcoming demeanour”, therefore the rationale has been taken to consider No.16 as the ‘reception room’ to the street, to greatly assist in retaining its “cultural significance” and its “participation” with the city and its people.

The proposed design expresses the craftsmanship and detailing of a piece of furniture, acting as a friendly and modest ‘bookend’ to the main historic length of the South side of the street. The furniture reference is primarily expressed in the untreated oak and glass façade; a display cabinet of fixed timber panels, fixed and opening glazing with opening timber shutters that allow flexibility of light, views, hanging space and privacy for the main rooms.

The proposal is that a variation on this scheme, with the quality of craftsmanship and detailing of a piece of furniture, could be used throughout the city; a unified design approach should be used to compliment, rehabilitate and unify the Georgian buildings of Dublin. A manifesto of quality of material, massing and approach should be drawn up, similar to the ‘rules’ used in the landlords lease of the original Georgian estates. This approach, taken over a generation, could tie the loose strands of Georgian buildings and streets in the city together allowing the connections and links to become easily apparent, ensuring that Dublin’s Georgian heritage could be more properly appreciated and embraced by the city and its communities.
