Our goal is to make Red Hook the most bike-friendly and transit connected neighborhood in New Yourk City. To that end, we have designed a bike loft near Smith/9th and created a bike path master plan that will encourage people to utilize bikes as a viable and convenient form of transportation.

We are proposing a new site for the bike oft on the corner of Smith/9th Street at 491 Smith Street, adapting and reusing the existing building which been vacant for nearly 15 years. The “under the Tracks” site is 1500 feet frm the Smith/9th station, a distance that we consider too far for the average bycicle commuter. Locating the bike loft in a convenient location, is vital in promoting bike use for commuters and weekends visiting Red Hook.

The Bike Loft will have the capacity to hold at least 120 bicycles, which be stored vertically along a high bay structural system. The Bike Loft will utilize a robotic armature that will automatically hoist the bicycle to a dedicated storage slot. In addition to a full-service bike shop ho handle repairs, rentals, and sales, the loft will have a dedicated space for a community-friendly amenity such as a coffee shop, small restarurant, bookstore, etc..

Our proposal includes a comprehensive “post and path” bike lane plan that will safely guide bicyclists to popular destinations and transit stops throughout Red Hook. Tha path will be coated with a durable, slip-resistant thermoplastic material, which has successfully been used in other bike friendly cities. In addition, flexible, reflective posts will demarcate bike lanes and create a safey barrier between bikes and vehicles. The upper part of these posts will be color codede to indicate pathways along the red Hook Loop to direct bicyclists towards popular destinations and transit points. The post and path system will be modified according to each road typology in Red Hook to maximize the bike lane width and maintain the safety of the bicyclist. A parking barrier will aslways separate bicyclists from moving cars.

Bike “corrals” are part of the larger vision of this proposal to create a streamlined model for connecting bikes to buses, water taxies, and pedestrian walkways. These corrals will be located along the Red Hook Loop near major destination points and transit stops to allow bicyclists to securely park their bikes and explore more as pedestrians, or to connect to the bus line or water taxi. Bus stops seating is integrated into the bike corrals to encourage ease of connectivity to other modes of transportation in Red Hook. Each bike corral will be equipped with secured tools for quick on-the-road repairs, along with a solar powered vending machine stocked with bike essentials such as extra tubes and patch kits alongside water, sodas, and snacks.
