To us the site strongly suggested a lightweight, highly transparent solution where the riverside paths are diverted from their current course and drawn across the river in two sweeping arcs. It should be a bridge of filigree cables rather than a massive gesture, where the cables describe a delicate three-dimensional form. Our design is a variation on the classic suspension bridge – in this case an asymmetric self-anchored structure – which is composed of a singular mast on the west bank and a deck that bifurcates to form a curvaceous Y in plan. Linking the two is a sweeping network of catenary cables, hangers and mesh infill.

The scale of the mast matches that of the surrounding trees and, in replacing just one tree on the river edge, it maintains the natural rhythm of the west bank.

Approaching the bridge from the east, users will experience the spatial volume of the proposed public square before curving north towards the National Space Centre or south towards the new Science Park. The bridge will be a legible and logical extension of the public realm but, rather than simply offering a straight crossing, the subtle curves of deck and cables bring delight – a place to observe the river, where casual strollers can pause and families can play.
