Caterpillar explores the notion of moire effect seeking to turn an undesired visual phenomenon into an intention and trying to virtually embed movement into the structure of a pedestrian footbridge.
The project is part of a larger redevelopment of a transport company. It provides new facilities and interconnects them with the existing offices. The Caterpillar footbridge constitutes an infrastructural spine interconnecting an existing building with a new office tower, archive, canteen and a guest area. The structure of the footbridge; a regular array of tubular frames forms a screen separating the industrial part of the site from the new relax area. The superposition of layers of tubular elements creates visual interferences while observed from different points and at different speeds . A shimmering effect caused by apparently undulating curved patterns augments the sensation of movement.
