The proposed structure embodies the characteristics of an intentional monument which does not demonstrate any specific function. It is a monument of absolute ornamentation, in the sense of pure memory. Its rhomboidal star shape, which also appears as the structural pattern of the surface, represents the memory of the infinite composition modularity from the Arabic geometrical ornament tradition. Technical complexity is present and justifies the structure’s place in a modern world, in which Dubai is establishing itself as a new capital, while at the same time is overshadowed by surface ornamentation according to the canon of traditional Arabic art. Arabic art teaches the saturation of bare structures with basic geometrical elements of ornamentation exemplified by the greatest Muslim architectural monuments, from Cordova to Bukhara. The new proposed emblem for Dubai does not refer to any naturalistic image: as memory of Arabic art’s heritage, the shape presents itself as a simple and abstract sign which refuses the imitation of nature, transcending perceptual materiality towards a logical, geometrical and mathematical concept.

Rising from a single base and concluding in a single peak, the 170 meters high structure forms a four-pointed rhomboidal star, whose geometry is determined mathematically by the function [x2+[(r’2 senα+1)/r’] z2 -2rx = 0] and by the matrices of rotation and reflection. The internal void between the four lateral ribs takes its shape from conjunctional lines of four imaginary circles intersected by a square. The sides of the structure are therefore curved and rotate around four different axis, extending into profundity. In this way the structure of the star rotates around itself, vertically forming the symbol of the infinite; different angles will render to the observer different geometrical shapes. Consequently, the new structure can also be interpreted as an infinite star: the “Infinite Star of Dubai”.

This affirms the infinite indissoluble composition-unity between the basic ornamental element and the final emblem, both of which are determined from the same geometric pattern.
