Just as knowledge was thought to be accretive, concrete (thus Asplund’s modernist Temple Of Knowledge) today it’s seen as fluid, dynamic. In this addition instead of walking around the books, the books hover around you. The cube inhabits the cylinder versus the cylinder in the cube of the original composition. Underlying structure lives in a sea of data; knowledge doesn’t live in structure.

Money spent on conveying systems will be saved on less material and operating costs: less area is needed as book aisles disappear.

Media Cabs

Each department is of different metal: zinc, copper, chromium. Echoing newsprint machines of the last century, these media rings each revolve at different rates, always around the observer. A hand gesture is all it takes to slow the flow and zap your selection. In this way brainstorming is encouraged and the sense of movement is simulated in the mind’s eye. At certain points the linearity of the turbines shift, reminiscent of recombinant DNA.

Expansion

Books accrete, delete over time. Sorting is from down below alongside the engines that make this data condenser work. Where gaps in knowledge occur, say between Derrida’s deconstructions and causality jive only clear glass remains: blue-sky dreaming, cloud talk.

Dream Platform

Shadows cast as random clouds on this platform of unassigned function and all functions: one may picnic, study, chat freely, flirt and wander about. This platform is the proverbial extension of the diagonal avenue Karlsbergs, scooping passerby into a grand world reminiscent of Boullee’s imagined library.

Book Selection

Armed with bar-code scanners, visitors zap their selection through the glass. Books are stacked so their titles are easy to read: sideways. No more tilting heads. This extends book life by suspending the tactile from the intellect: grubby hands may still finger books in the old library where traditional stacks remain.

No two visits to the library will ever be the same…
