The “Teatr w budowie” project consists of two architectural blocks: the existing theater and designed Culture’s Meeting Centre accompanied by an adjoining public space. The main idea behind the project was to retain this division, by assigning the above mentioned functions to separate objects, joined by a variety of indoor and outdoor public spaces.

In urban scale, the focal point of our project is the public space, which is an active and open setting, that constitutes a surrounding for the architecture. The functional division of proposed buildings is underlined by a suspended walkway that separates the theater and Culture’s Meeting Centre and invites the participants of various cultural and social events into both complexes. The walkway also acts as a visual border of the plaza, giving its users a sense of privacy.
The theater’s mass is covered by a Core-Ten steel structure, that invites people inside the building, through covering a part of the plaza and acts as it’s ‘fifth elevation’.

The idea behind dividing the architectural object in two, almost separate complexes has several reasons. First of all, the part of the existing building that is replaced is the least clear in terms of function, existing construction and communication scheme. Secondly, our design proposition enables a better and more flexible use of building space through the use of a clear, open space plan where possible. Finally the five segments of Culture’s Meeting Centre adjust the building scale to the surrounding and create five functional complexes joined by a system of suspended walkways.

The communication axis that begins at level +1 with the suspended walkway, rises as high as the rooftop level and is ended by a small plaza, with a restaurant and a skydeck, that can be accessed from the main administration centre. The roof of the existing building can be adapted as an exhibition space, partially covered by a Core-Ten steel structure. A similar function is also proposed for the Culture’s Meeting Centre rooftop space.

The inside of main concert hall reflects the proposed exterior design, through the use of stone tiles, mounted at different angles as wall covering, and Core-Ten steel sheets as acoustic panels.

The majority of building facades are multi-layered curtain walls with integrated internal and external solar-shading, that prevent direct sunlight and radiation from passing through. The existing structure is covered by fairly neutral limestone tiles.

The structure covering the existing building’s mass is mounted to a steel truss, and covered by Core-Ten steel sheets. The idea behind the design is to add lightness to theatre’s form and make the building less monumental.
