Dolly goes to Downtown

The project area is developed from two different point of view and two different speeds. The main topic of the northern part is the presence of the infrastructure which connects the place with the city, the region and the country. Such infrastructures are the railway, “Le Bied” river and the road. The perception of the landscape from this point is quite fast and as a consequence the project develops a large scale design. The movement is bound east to west and the project plans a variation of the infrastructure perpendicular to the main movement. The public spaces are collocated along the main road and the architecture is developed in one simple act: the repetition, the clone of a very vernacular style. Like the Pop-art technique the “heimatstil” construction is not just preserved but it’s repeated “ad infinitum” in order to give new meanings to the typical alpine construction. The variation of this architecture is due to the landscape which is framed at the ground level by the main structure of the buildings, at the higher level the interaction with the rail track which the volumes and the use of a glossy façade which absorbs and reflects the variations of the weather and the natural light.

The second part of the project is subdivided within an urban grid and the will to create a unique green soil leads the design process. The framework of Le Locle gives the correct dimension to the new grid, subdividing the area into several plots which could be related to the urban “insulae”. The plot is subdivided within a second smaller grid which creates several pixels that contributes to shape the image of this extension of the city. Those pixels are taken as framework to collocate the urban matters as buildings, offices, workshops, trees and so on. If the classical “insula” builds along its borders, protecting the inside core, the new one opens to the landscape, the inside area is reversed outside. Natural materials as trees, cultivations, fields of flowers are used to trace the border of the plots: a sustainable strategy is shaping the new urban landscape. The design of the part at the south side of the river follows two principles: the periodical conditions of the environment, and the relationship between architecture and nature.
