One Prize 2011: Water As the Sixth Borough

Open International Design Competition to Envision the Sixth Borough of New York City

ONE PRIZE is an Annual Design and Science Award to Promote Green Design in Cities.

One Prize Invites the World Most Talented and Enterprising:

architects, landscape architects, urban designers, planners, engineers, scientists, cleantech entrepreneurs, economists, artists, students and individuals:

To propose the City’s “BLUE NETWORK” by expanding waterborne transportation and linking the five boroughs with a series of green transit hubs incorporating electric passenger ferries, water taxis, bike shares, electric car- share and electric shuttle busses as well as providing in-water recreation, water- oriented educational and cultural activities and climate resilience.

To further propose for New York City a design for the WORLD’S LARGEST CLEAN TECH EXPO E3NYC in 2014, and by doing so to create the world’s largest urban clean tech corridor along the water, establish itself as the ultimate green capital of the world. In April 2010, Mayor Michael Bloomberg launched the New York City Waterfront Vision and Enhancement Strategy (WAVES), a citywide initiative that will create a new sustainable blueprint for the City’s 578 miles of shoreline. Planning Commission Chair Amanda Burden said: “Water is so important that we need to think of it as the sixth borough.”

In April, 2014, New York City will celebrate the 50th Anniversary of 1964 New York World’s Fair, dedicated to Man’s Achievement on a Shrinking Globe in an Expanding Universe. The fair is best remembered as a showcase of mid-20th century American culture and technology. More than 51 million people attended the fair. The nascent Space Age, with its vista of promise, was well-represented. 50 years later, it is time for New York City to showcase the 21st century promise of CLEANTECH.

ONE PRIZE announces an open call for ideas for:

NYC BLUE NETWORK linking NYC five boroughs with a series of green transit hubs incorporating electric passenger ferries, water taxis, bike shares, electric car-share and electric shuttle busses. The transit system should work with the existing transit system, but not tax it. During the summer of 2014,transportation system accommodate the 10 million visitors of the Clean Tech World Expo. The core of the transit system should be a series of green transit hubs, 1 for each borough.
